Code: lka96   Media: Watercolour
Artist: Colette Fontaine   Nationality: British

Colette Anna Fontaine b1929. Later gained her diploma in Design & Illustration 1951. By 1953 Colette was awarded The University of London Art Teachers certificate. This amazing work may remind some of us more senior citizens of time thankfully long gone, for the younger amongst you it shows the time your parents and grandparents lived through, and the hardships faced. Shocking yet very well executed. Signed and dated 24.2.48 verso. Dimensions: 38cmx48cm approx

View of London View of London
Code: lka69   Media: Oil
Artist: R Greaves   Nationality: British

The painting is signed R.Greaves for the British artist Ronald Coomer Greaves 1916-2005. The painting is dated 1963, and is a genuine oil on canvas. The picture is 86 cm / 34 inches high and 112 cm / 44 inches wide. Post and packing for this canvas will be expensive due to its size, please email for an estimate. Here we have a stunning view of London during rush-hours. The Thames runs diagonally through the painting and the bridges are full of buses and cars. Chimneys and skyscrapers tower against the orange, cloudy sky and to the left Tower bridge rises above the roof tops. This colourful depiction is characterized by rough and broad brush strokes, which connects it to the expressionist movement in the early 20th century.

Thatched Cottage Thatched Cottage
Code: lka63   Media: Pencil
Artist: Emma W Eakins   Nationality: British

Delightful drawing of a small thatched cottage on a hillock, with curious looking thatched hut below, beside a country track. A wood in the background. Wonderful detail in the buildings themselves, the surrounding trees, shrubs, etc. A very peaceful scene. This picture is indistinctly signed E.W.Eakins, and on the reverse the artist has written her name in full in pencil (quite faded now). Although not dated, I have others by the artist signed and dated 1843/1844. Condition: Some slight surface dirt on the paper, but no more than you would expect for its age. Apart from this, good condition. Dimensions: 21cm x 27cm

Edge of the village Edge of the village
Code: lka132   Media: Watercolour
Artist: W.E Riley   Nationality: British

Edge of the Village from a large collection of watercolours that I am selling that are attributed to W.E Riley, born 1852. This picture is probably painted in the West country, between Somerset, Dorset or Devon, but I surmise, though the Thatch combined with the color of the cottages is indicative. The majority are landscapes. There are many pictures of the Stour valley and also quite a few painted in Wales ,the West Country and the Home Counties. measures 11 by 7 approx or 27.5cms by 18cms. Painted on paper. Overall condition good.

Castle Combe Castle Combe
Code: lka259   Media: Etching
Artist: Edward W Sharland   Nationality: British

An English architectural and landscape etcher and full member of the Fine Art Trade Guild. Exhibited in Liverpool, Bristol, the Royal West of England Academy, and at the Royal Academy London. He specialized in colour etchings. His etchings include scenes of cities in Italy, Spain, Belgium and Holland as views of London, Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol. This charming little etching is of Castle Combe, Whiltshire, England, considered by those in the know to be One of the prettiest Towns in England. Signed in pencil by artist, mounted and framed. Etching is a printmaking process that dates back 500 years. The etching process involves sheets of metal, usually made of copper or zinc, and acid used to etch the print onto the metal. The artist can use complicated methods to create different effects, but always relies on acid to etch the plate. The more complicated the etching, the more time consuming and expensive it will be.

The Knitting Lesson
Scottish artist J P Downie began exhibiting 1885. Painted widely around Glasgow, and the Clyde in particular was a huge draw for inspiration. The Knitting Lesson, signed and dated 1907 is a true example of a Scottish master at work, with his seemingly effortless use of color and light.
